TIES (The Immigrant Education Society) continues to connect with Calgarians and empower newcomers, recently hosting an Open House.
“Our open house is like inviting guests into our home,” Mayssoun Hniedi, Mgr., Employment & Career Development says.
“It's warm, friendly, and open to all.”
Some 100 visitors stopped by on Aug. 12th, taking in a one-stop shop offering information about valuable programs and resources — all focused on getting them settled and working in Canada.
TIES Employment & Career Services was on hand to aid in the job search. From interviewing tips to employment laws, to helping spruce up resumes with the a resume clinic, visitors walked away more confident.
Confidence also comes from knowing the language, and that’s where the experts from TIES Hub for Literacy Resources came in. They helped navigate the various English language classes TIES offers, whether it be in-person, online, or drop-in.
Financial literacy counsellors helped explain the often-complex Canadian banking and tax system with their Money Smart Program.
Other programs offering their valuable insight included Healthy Minds, Little Beginnings Urban Oasis Childcare, and TIES Centre for Immigrant Research (CIR).
“Our team were so pleased to have welcomed the first-time visitors to TIES as well as previous clients and old friends,” Sally Zhao, TIES Pres. & CEO says.
“The big smiles on everyone's face when they leave our door inspires us to do better every day.”
May Langley travelled across the city — almost an hour by bus and train — to come to the Open House.
An easy journey, she says, compared to what she’s experienced since immigrating to Canada from Thailand in 2021.
“I kind of struggle and suffered,” Langley says. “You cannot do anything much, no driving license, and you have no confidence for your English skills.”
Organizations like TIES she says, are a “lifeline” for newcomers like her.
“As a newcomer, I have no idea where to start. They open the door for me. To get to know more people and talk more with the people and maybe learning something new.”
Kseniia M., a Ukrainian native, knows all about new things. She’s very new to Canada, arriving here just over a month ago.
Her family’s journey took them from Ukraine to Russia to Montenegro, before finally being approved for a Canadian Visa.
“The war started and I’m Ukrainian and I couldn’t stay there,” she says. “My husband, he is Russian. We didn't want him to fight, so we moved.”
Kseniia had a successful arts, theatre and teaching career back home. Now, she says, she’s starting from scratch.
That’s what lead her to TIES.
“I have questions about programs. Which programs can I apply for?” she questions. “I have a question about resume because I need to find a job.”
Mayssoun Hniedi and Sally Zhao both say opening the doors to TIES was about more than just finding programs and resources — it was about finding a connection in Calgary and Canada.
“I hope everyone who came felt right at home. Welcomed, supported, and connected to TIES services that can make their integration journey a little easier,” Hniedi says.
“Our door is always open when you are looking for support or you are looking for opportunities to support others!” Zhao adds.
“Together we are stronger for our beautiful diverse and inclusive country and community!”
The Immigrant Education Society served more than 35,000 newcomers and citizens-in -need since its inception in 1988.
The various programs and services at TIES have helped newcomers find a solid foothold to happily contribute to the economic prosperity and social cohesiveness of Canada.
TIES would like to thank the community for its trust, and is extremely grateful to all the funders, donors and partners for helping our dedicated team help those in need.
