TIES (The Immigrant Education Society) is hosting an upcoming event that is expected to draw hundreds of hopeful jobseekers.
The Employer Appreciation & Youth Networking Event, being held on Feb. 5th at the Genesis Centre, is an exclusive opportunity to network with multiple employers, recruiters, and HR professionals.
A perfect opportunity, say organizers, to put your best foot forward.
“It's really challenging to be looking for a first job,” TIES Manager, Employment & Career Development Mayssoun Hniedi points out.
“Challenging, as a born-and-raised Canadian, and even more challenging for newcomers who don't have networks, who don't have the experience – the Canadian experience.”
A recent job fair held by TIES and other immigrant serving agencies saw more than 500 people crowd in – looking for opportunities.
Hniedi says connecting at these types of events is vital to landing a job.
“It's an opportunity to interact with recruiters and employers and to understand their hiring needs,” she points out.
“My recommendation is to come with an open mind. Try to talk to as many employers as possible. Bring your updated

Bianca Anunobi is a big believer in the power of networking.
Originally from Nigeria, she immigrated to Canada in 2024. New to the country, she struggled with finding her footing.
“I was unemployed up until March last year,” Anunobi says.
Then she learned about the EYE (Employing Youth Through Employment) program at TIES which got her a practicum at another non-profit SafeLink.
When that ended, she continued her job search and says unlike the past, she started “landing interviews”!
“Prior to getting the job at SafeLink, no one was calling me for interviews because I had work experience from my country, but I didn't have Canadian work experience,” she says.
“So, the program really helped, because finally, I landed three interviews with three big non-profits here in Calgary – one of which was TIES!”

She chose to go work with TIES!
“Them being the first people that give me a shot, trained me, helped me land my first job, actually working here as a staff, helping other immigrants – it's like a full circle moment for me!”
Her advice for other job seekers, especially youth, get out there!
“I've met a good number of people at the networking events that I've been to recently, that I know are actually very valuable to my career. Networking in Calgary is very, very essential and I feel like people should take it super seriously.”
“You don't know who you might meet. Might be your next boss or even a business partner.”
