TIES (The Immigrant Education Society) has received $90,000 from TD Bank to help immigrants become financially literate — something newcomers say is desperately needed.

TIES, a not-for-profit immigrant serving agency which also helps low-income Calgarians, is one of 14 organizations across Canada — and the only one in Alberta — to receive a share of a $1 million donation.
“TIES is thrilled to be the only Alberta organization chosen by TD,” TIES Chief Programs Officer, Suman Khanal says.
“TD’s support will help us deliver the financial education and one-on-one counselling needed to build financial confidence, stability, and independence for thousands of families.”
“This partnership is more than funding,” TIES President & CEO Sally Zhao adds.
“It is a powerful statement of trust and commitment to helping newcomers and other financially challenged Canadians build strong financial futures.”
The money will help fund the Pathway to Financial Success (PFS) program at TIES.
The program educates newcomers on the Canadian banking system, how to build credit, how to own a home, financial planning, savings products, and entrepreneurship development.
“Newcomers face unique challenges as they navigate a new country,” TD Senior Manager, Philanthropy, Robyn Small adds.
“TIES is helping to break down barriers and provide newcomers with essential money management skills and confidence.”
Canada's financial system differs vastly from many other countries and newcomers are often unaware of financial benefits and pitfalls. This unfamiliarity can lead to financial distress and difficulty managing finances.
TIES recognized these challenges and launched its own financial literacy program back in 2012.
TD Bank Group has been along for the financial journey throughout the years.

Recent surveys by TD have highlighted several serious challenges faced by newcomers when it comes to financial literacy.
More than half (57%) of newcomers in the Prairies say they do not feel that they have enough money to live comfortably in Canada.
A further 51% say it was/is difficult managing their finances since arriving in the country.
Noha El Tanahi, who heads the PFS program, says it has made a huge difference for a wide range of clients.
“The program has made a transformative impact on strengthening financial literacy, resilience, and inclusion among newcomers, refugees, visible minorities, youth, seniors and low-income individuals in Calgary,” she says.
“A visible impact was achieved on 1,047 clients, including 702 who were unbanked, underbanked, or underserved, through interactive workshops, personalized coaching, and financial system navigation support.”
“Overall, the program continues to be a driving force in improving financial well-being and fostering financial empowerment across the community.”

TIES also offers a TIES Free Tax Clinic, which allows clients to file their taxes accurately and access critical government benefits.
Additionally, workshops on Registered Savings Plans — including RESPs, RRSPs, RDSPs, and FHSAs — equip people with tools for long-term financial planning in areas such as education, retirement, and housing.
Clients are also encouraged to partake in educational sessions on fraud prevention, protecting them from potential victimization.
