TIES Entrepreneur Spotlight: Mexican Immigrant Prescribes Solutions for Newcomer Health Professionals

December 9, 2025

News

When Brenda Alvarez arrived in Canada in 2017 from Mexico, she brought with her an impressive resume and two young children.

The single mom, educator, and medical doctor also brought along a dream — to start her own business.

“I was looking for a type of work that I can let me take care of my kids, but also be in charge of my time,” she said.

She wanted this business to reflect her own challenges in Canada. The biggest — having her healthcare credentials recognized.

“When I started looking for a job here, I didn't know how to recognize my credentials in Canada,” she said. “How can I prove that I have all of the requirements, knowledge, experience, etc?”
“Nobody could help me. Most of the people said that it was not possible — that I had to start over.”

Turns out — she didn’t.

Not only did she land a great job in Canada as a human anatomy professor at Mount Royal University and now Bow Valley College, but she’s also been able to follow her entrepreneurial dream.

Prescribing Solutions

Alvarez founded Bosworth Institute Educational Consulting and Training Centre: Consulting Agency for Health Professionals in Canada in 2018.

Its main purpose: help health professionals know their options in Canada and get licensed.

“So that they know what to expect. How long it’s going to take. How much it’s going to cost. Everything and anything that they need to know.”

Her clients are largely from Latin American countries (South America and Central America).

Some are already in Canada; others are hoping to make it their home.

Bosworth Institute is largely run online, with the help of six staff. Those staff have helped hundreds of clients worldwide, in a variety of healthcare fields.

“We have helped a lot of clients — technicians, nurses, veterinarians, dentists and doctors,” Alvarez said.

Still, the path to entrepreneurship hasn’t always been a smooth one.

“I know my business, I know about my work, but I don't know how a company works,” she pointed out.
“I don't know how to run a business, how to expand my business, how to increase and take my business to the next level.”

That’s where TIES (The Immigrant Education Society) and its Integrated Women’s Entrepreneurship Project (IWEP) have come in.

IWEP is a free, nine-week program offered by TIES, to support diverse and traditionally underserved women entrepreneurs launch a new business or grow an existing one.

“Starting a business is hard for anyone, but doing it in a new country, in a new language, while learning new systems, becomes a completely different challenge,” Entrepreneurship Program Manager Nash Chaparro said.
“Newcomers don’t just create businesses - they rebuild their lives from scratch.”

She’s only halfway through the program, but Alvarez said she’s already learned a lot.

“So far, I’ve learned a lot about business, how to manage finances, collaborate with partners, plan my short- and long-term goals etc.”
“I didn’t even realize how complicated all of this is.”

Prescription for Success? Never Give Up!

Through it all, Alvarez said she has remained positive — something she knows is not easy for many newcomer entrepreneurs.

Her advice: stick with it and get help.

“When you find out what you’re good for, and you really enjoy it, that could be an amazing opportunity to open your own business, start your own dream, go for your goals,” she said.
“I think it's possible, and with the guidance of TIES — it's even better. I would have liked to have had this help at the beginning of my business.”

TIES and IWEP will be hosting a Winter Market on Thursday Dec. 11th in Calgary featuring some of these wonderful entrepreneurial businesses.

Everyone is welcome to come and support them.
