TIES Employment Event Showcases Significant Challenges Facing Young Jobseekers

News

A recent youth hiring fair has showcased the grim reality facing Canadian and newcomer youth looking for work.

More than 300 jobseekers turned out to the Employer Appreciation & Youth Networking Event on Feb. 5th at the Genesis Centre, hosted by TIES (The Immigrant Education Society).

The majority – hoping for any opportunity to land a job.

Since last year I’ve been looking for work,” Helen said. “But I don’t find it.”
“You need to have a lot of experience, a huge background,” Diana echoed. “Especially if you’re an immigrant.”

Canada’s unemployment rate climbed to 6.8 per cent in December, reaching seven per cent in Alberta. For youth, it’s almost double that number (13.3) nationally, and it was at almost 20 per cent in Calgary last September.

The number for newcomers and racialized youth – even higher.

“It's taking a lot longer for our clients to connect with meaningful job opportunities,” TIES Manager, Employment & Career Development Mayssoun Hniedi said.

Hniedi added that while a lot of these racialized youth may lack Canadian job experience they don’t lack employment skills.

Her team’s job is to connect these employees with potential employers.

“We’re trying to connect employers, who are open to hiring newcomers, who are open to giving newcomers opportunities,” she said.
“We are the bridge to hopefully bring them together and they come out of here with some hope!”

Jimmy Ruganzu, with Freebridge Cleaning Services Inc., was one of 24 employers on hand at the event, to help provide that hope.

“People are looking for work. They came from all over. We are in a time of hiring now. We need more cleaners,” he said.

TIES regularly hosts hiring events along with offering various employment programs.

President & CEO Sally Zhao said it’s important TIES help – wherever it can.

“These programs exist to hep youth, especially those facing barriers,” she said. “To help build confidence. Develop skills. Find their pathway into the labour market.”
“The first job opportunity can change the entire trajectory of a young person’s life.”

Thank you!

TIES extends its deepest gratitude to all of the employers that participated in the event.

It’s also grateful for media partners (CTV Calgary/National, CBC Calgary, Global News Calgary, Postmedia/Calgary Herald) who continue to come out and bring these important stories to the Canadian public.
