Raising Hope and Funds while Celebrating Canadian Music

October 21, 2025

News

TIES (The Immigrant Education Society) is celebrating Canadian music legends with its upcoming fundraiser Make Room for Hope: Celebrating Canadian Music Icons on Strings taking place on Oct. 24th.

Guests will get to experience the timeless hits of Canadian artists – Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette, Sarah McLachlan, Michael Bublé, and Leonard Cohen – reimagined by Calgary’s own Stampede String Quartet.

For Dahlia Orcajada, TIES Manager, Communications and Marketing, this event is meaningful, and she hopes it resonates with others as well.

“Life moves fast. When did we last stop moving? This is an opportunity to take a pause—to make room for music in our lives and for some much-needed hope.”

Celebrating Canadian Culture and Raising Funds

The choice to celebrate Canadian music icons was intentional.

TIES is often seen as being just an “immigrant” organization. But Orcajada says she hopes this event “shifts” how people see the non-profit.

“We want Calgarians to discover us through something hopeful and unexpected, then learn about the work we do supporting newcomers and families in need.”
“I think that music can connect us, regardless of where we are from,” TIES President and CEO Sally Zhao says.
“We know that music has no boundaries. Music is powerful. Music is love. I hope by the end of the evening we are all united in our diverse backgrounds so we can form a stronger community.”

A stronger community also includes a stronger economy.

TIES is hoping to raise enough funds to strengthen its core programs, including language, employment, financial literacy, mental health and childcare.

TIES is grateful for the funding it gets from governments, organizations and other donors but Zhao says there are still gaps.

“On a daily basis, through three physical locations and our online portal, we are serving 3,000 clients every day. But, we also have more than 3,000 clients on our waiting list.”
“We hope that with additional funding we can serve more clients, empower them so they can make their dreams come true and also contribute back to the Canadian economy,” Zhao adds.

Partnerships in Action

The concert will be held at the stunning La Cité des Rocheuses Theatre.

La Cité des Rocheuses is Calgary’s francophone cultural and community centre, promoting a wide range of artistic, educational, and community initiatives.

Just like TIES, its programs support newcomers, families, and youth, contributing to a more inclusive and multicultural Calgary, and Canada.

“Events like this fundraiser concert are vital for both immigrant-serving agencies and the broader community,”  Director General Hervé Stéclebout says.
“They create opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to come together, share experiences, and build mutual understanding.”

La Cité’s vibrant space also includes a recently opened restaurant, Café Théâtre, a hidden gem in SW Calgary showcasing authentic French and international cuisine!

A portion of the proceeds from the restaurant on concert night will go to help TIES fundraising efforts.

Music and ART!

Event goers will also be treated to some amazing artwork by TIES own Voices in the Art Project.

This unique and successful project has been exhibited to the public at the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary to much praise.

VIA was launched by the TIES Centre for Immigrant Research as a way to showcase the powerful stories of intersectional youth.

Be Part of the Musical Journey

TIES appreciates everyone making room for more hope through giving, music, and art. No amount is too small.

Crowdfunding Alberta Campaign

Thanks to Crowdfunding Alberta, every donation to TIES is matched 50% until October 31 (up to $5,000 raised). That means a $10 gift becomes $15, and $100 becomes $150 — increasing the impact for newcomers and families in need. 🔗 Click here to make a donation
