“Ignite Volunteerism”: Volunteers Bring the Spark to TIES

News

Volunteers are vital to many organizations, and TIES (The Immigrant Education Society) is not any different.

“Volunteer support is at the heart of TIES,” Manager, EAL & Foundational Learning Irina Copil says.

Copil has been involved in overseeing volunteer efforts at the non-profit since 2013.

She says it's important to recognize those who give hours of their free time – for free.

“They show up each day with care and commitment to support clients and staff and build stronger, more connected communities."

Nilofer Shows Up!

Nilofer Fernandes has been “showing up” at TIES for the past six years, and volunteering across Calgary for 43 years!

She says volunteering makes her feel “connected” to her city and community.

“I feel like I’m contributing in a meaningful way with a sense of accomplishment,” she adds.
“You don’t get anything back in kind; however, you do gain wisdom and understanding regardless of our different backgrounds.”

Nilofer says as a visible minority working at a newcomer organization, her students are more comfortable sharing their stories.

But she points out that she is not only teaching them – they are teaching her as well!

“I had a student who spoke French, he taught me how to pronounce 'croissants', he was very excited that he could teach me something as well, so it gives my students and myself a feeling of mutual learning.”

Twice the Spark!

Olivia Edwards started volunteering at TIES at the start of 2018. She came to TIES following a 34-year career at Canada Post.

After moving from Edmonton to Calgary, she was looking for something to do that “interested” her. She liked doing tax returns, so she started volunteering with TIES Tax Clinic.

“Many low income or newcomers to Canada don’t know how to prepare taxes so doing it for them makes me feel good and gives me great satisfaction,” she says.

Olivia says giving her time and experience to help others, without expecting anything in return, will hopefully inspire others to do the same.

“Keep the wheel of giving moving forward so more people can benefit.  It makes our world a kinder and better place to live.”

Olivia has enjoyed her time so much at TIES that she recruited a friend!

Ines Buchanan has been with the non-profit for four years now. Believe it or not, she too enjoys doing taxes!

“Many new immigrants have a limited understanding of the income tax system and don't have the resources to hire someone to file on their behalf,” she adds.

The retiree says volunteering enriches her life and gives her a purpose.

“As you age, staying active socially and cognitively are rewards in themselves. Western society, in general, tends to undervalue people as they age.  No one wants to feel that they are becoming a burden.”

Both women say they plan to continue volunteering as long as they can!

“TIES is an interesting place,” Ines says.

“I have seen people come to TIES as volunteers and get a full-time job there eventually.  Their personal growth and competence are amazing. It’s good to see.”

“I really enjoy volunteering at TIES because of the diverse and friendly staff that runs the Tax Clinic,” Olivia echoes.
“It’s like a mini United Nations. I’m from Taiwan originally so being an immigrant myself and now a Canadian Citizen, I can relate and feel comfortable volunteering at TIES.”

Message from TIES President & CEO

This Volunteer Week, we celebrate you! Thank you for the passion, generosity, and commitment you bring to serving others. Your willingness to step forward—time and again—ignites volunteerism and makes a real difference in the lives of individuals and communities across our nation.

Your impact doesn’t end with this week. Through every act of service, big or small, you help build stronger, more connected communities all year long. Together, we are shaping a better nation!

Volunteers at TIES

Volunteers play a vital role in the daily life of TIES, strengthening operations, programs and services serving as Board Members, teaching classes (e.g., Drop-in ESL, Reading Room), serving as teachers’ assistants (RISE, LINC, CALL), and supporting reception.

They also help with preparing taxes through the Tax Clinic, assisting Mental Health, Employment, and Research programming in various capacities, supporting Casino Fundraisers and other TIES events.

Ignite Volunteerism" is the theme for National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 19-25, 2026.

It's designed to spark action, passion, and a renewed culture of giving back.

2026 has also been named the International Year of Volunteers.
