Avison Young Helps Calgary and TIES Climb Strong

Avison Young is proudly Canadian.

“Avison Young was actually founded through a partnership of an Edmonton-based company and a Toronto-based company,” Avison VP, Sales & Leasing Sean Clark says. 

“We are strongly rooted in Canadian history.”

Avison Young also has deep roots in Calgary – having been part of the city’s landscape for about three decades.

“There are many companies that play a role in commercial real estate,” Avison VP, Investment, Multifamily Haig Basmadjian adds.

“But what’s fascinating about it is how we play a direct part in shaping our city. We do much in terms of what this city looks like, what it feels like, how it functions.”

How Avison Young Shapes Calgary

Avison Young is a full-service brokerage company specializing in commercial real estate both here and abroad.

Its role is to facilitate partnerships.

“When groups, outside of the province, outside of the city, see the opportunities that our city presents, we facilitate those groups coming to our city. Investing and building. Employing people,” Basmadjian explains.

“We sell land to developers that build towering buildings. We help reposition assets, or lease retail, that open up a cool restaurant in your neighbourhood.”

It takes a lot of work. No year is the same for commercial real estate in Calgary.

Ever-changing cultural, economic, and political climates, have meant Avison Young has had to change.

“Calgary is a dynamic economy and a dynamic culture and we’re constantly growing and adapting,” Clark says. “That’s the same with commercial real estate. I think we really mirror the culture of the city.”

“We also have a relative youthful group of team members who are more adaptable to changes.”

“Avison Young has a people-first culture. What does that mean? We’re extremely fun to be around,” Clark says.

“Every single day that I come into the office, I’m laughing and joking around with some people that I hang out with the most.”

“This is a stressful business right. It’s the reality of what we do every single day — it’s stressful,” Basmadjian echoes. “The best way to relieve that stress is by doing things that are really fun.”

Avison Gives Back

That fun includes taking part in TIES Climb Strong fundraiser on Oct. 3rd at the Calgary Tower.

Not only is Avison Young a Gold Sponsor, it has also put together a team to participate in the climbing event!

For Sean Clark, the event has a special, personal connection.

“I’m a third-generation Canadian,” he explains.

“My grandmother’s family immigrated from Prussia during WW11. They first moved into Saskatchewan and when my grandmother and grandfather got married at 18, they drove into Calgary. That was the year before the Calgary Tower was built.”

“Overall Calgarians are a very giving group of people,” Haig Basmadjian adds. “There are countless organizations that are doing everything they can to help their community every single day and we’re doing our part.”

As for climbing the 802 steps of the tower? No sweat! Or at least very little.
