Caring is sharing.
And AltaLink shared both its time and its expertise with TIES (The Immigrant Education Society) August 19th – choosing the nonprofit as the recipient of its Days of Caring Program.

About 10 employees with AltaLink, one of Canada’s largest electricity transmission companies, volunteered their wealth of knowledge with TIES employment clients.
“It’s such an important event because we’re always looking for our clients to have real life experiences. Having that experience brings what we teach them in class to life,” TIES Manager, Employment & Career Development Mayssoun Hniedi said.
“It means so much to us.”
“Coming from a corporate background we have a lot of experience in some of the best practices for resumes and interviews,” AltaLink Senior Project Manager, Substation Project Delivery Karim Kurji said.
“We’re just trying to give some of those best practices to people who may not have seen them before.”
“I hope that we can make even a little bit of a difference to each one of these clients.”

As part of AltaLink’s Days of Caring Program, the corporation chooses a charity and then sponsors a day of volunteering by its employees.
Kurji said this is the first time this type of mentoring work has been done with a newcomer organization.
“AltaLink has such a diverse workforce. Lots of people who have come from different countries and have struggled to find jobs earlier in their careers, so we figured that this is a really good way to give back.”
And give back they did. AltaLink volunteers met individually with clients — for hours — reviewing resumes and conducting mock interviews.
“Interviews are intimidating and even if you’ve done one or 100 — it’s still kind of stressful,” Kurji said.
“So, if you can gain a bit of confidence and feel that you’re answering questions appropriately, it helps and it makes all the difference to be successful.”

Harsimran Kaur hopes it will make a difference for her. She’s just started the daunting job search and is looking for any kind of advice.
“I’m totally new to Calgary, it’s just 2 months since I arrived from India. So, I wanted to rehearse. I wanted to gain something of an experience in interviews,” Kaur added.
A University professor back home, Kaur said the job seeking process is different in Canada than in India.
“I’ve learned many things. Some things that we were never aware of in India,” she said. “Things like we need to ask questions from the employer. I was not aware of that because in India, we don’t do that.”
“I loved it. It was an amazing, amazing experience.”

Hniedi said she’s confident most – if not all – of the clients walked out of the event with more knowledge and confidence.
“They (AltaLink) probably don’t realize the impact that it makes for an organization like TIES, for newcomers, to see a big company invest and care about newcomers,” she said.
“Thank you so much to AltaLink and the entire team. They’ve been amazing to work with and we invite other corporations, other organizations to do the same. We’d be happy to work with them.”
“It will make a huge difference for our clients, newcomers, our community.”
