Perhaps the most unique and accessible of all our programs, CIES has been delivering its one of kind Drop-In ESL Program since 1988. Funded by the Government of Alberta, this program assists students with their overall communicative competence and work on their language skills in a flexible way, despite their other commitments. Drop-In ESL is also one of our few programs open to Canadian citizens.
We are actively seeking instructors for these classes, which typically hold 6-12 students, and are held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons (1:30pm to 4:00pm) or evenings (6:00pm to 8:30pm).
Drop-In ESL Instructors are provided with a class curriculum from which to draw on and provide adult immigrants with English language training by exploring weekly themes and practical subjects which are directly related to daily living and employability skills. Aimed at helping participants adapt and integrate smoothly into Canadian society, three different levels of classes are offered: pre-basic, basic, and intermediate/advanced. Volunteer instructors are also encouraged to attend training workshops that are conducted by the manager of the Drop-In ESL program and cover various teaching strategies and issues.
While it is preferred that volunteer facilitators have a background in education, teachers and teachers-in-training with all levels of experience are invited to apply.
Additionally, volunteer facilitators should have the following:
- Patience and empathy
- A desire to help newcomers to Canada
- Excellent spoken English skills
