What: CIES will be running a Community Volunteer Income Tax Program throughout April 2018 to help families and individuals with simple tax situations complete their Canadian income tax return. This service is by appointment only.

 The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) helps taxpayers who have a modest income and a simple tax situation. This may include:

  • Newcomers to Canada
  • Social Assistance recipients
  • Seniors
  • Youth

To determine your eligibility, check to see if you fit into the following guidelines. Your total family income should be less than the amount shown in the chart:

Suggested Income Levels:

Family size Total family income
1 person $30,000
2 persons $40,000
3 persons $42,500
4 persons $45,000
5 persons $47,500
more than 5 persons $47,500 plus $2,500 for each additional person

Families or individuals with simple tax situations are encouraged to apply. Your tax situation is considered simple if your income comes from the following sources:

  • Employment
  • Pension
  • Benefits such as the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), disability, employment insurance (EI), or social assistance
  • Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs)
  • Support Payments
  • Scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, or grants
  • Interest (under $1,000)

You will NOT be eligible for the tax clinic if you:

  • are self-employed or have employment expenses
  • have business income and expenses (unless income is in box 048 on a T4A slip and less than $1,000 with no related expenses)
  • have rental income and expenses
  • have interest income over $1,000
  • have capital gains or losses
  • file for bankruptcy
  • are completing a tax return for a deceased person

When you arrive for your appointment, you will be asked to provide proof of identity. Your identity should:

  • be valid
  • be government issued
  • include a photo

Some examples include:

  • provincial or territorial (or equivalent abroad) driver’s license or photo identification
  • Canadian or foreign passport
  • Certificate of Indian Status
  • military or other government employee identification card
