Looking for a job? Job opportunities for youth in September and October

Calgary youth aged 15-24 have a valuable resource on their side when it comes to finding a job – the city’s Youth Employment Centre, located on the second floor of 315 – 10 Avenue SE. TheEmployment Counsellors at the Youth Employment Centre will help interested youth to access job preparation classes, build their resumes, and alert them to job hiring fairs and other opportunities. Additionally, all of the services provided by the Youth Employment Centre are FREE to holders of a Canadian social insurance number (to find out how to apply for a social insurance number, which is open to all Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents, Refugees, and Temporary Residents, click here).

If you are interested in accessing the help of the Youth Employment Centre, your first step will be to register and to meet with an Employment Counsellor. Counselling services are available Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 3:30 pm, and are available without an appointment – just bring your social insurance number.

If you’ve gone through the steps above and you’ve already registered with the Youth Employment Centre, there are a number of upcoming hiring events that may interest you. Below, a selection of upcoming events from the Youth Employment Centre website:

September 28: The Film and Theatre Industry

Ever wondered about working behind the scenes in the film and theatre industry? What kind of skill sets and experience are required? Come and find out from the experts from 2-3 p.m. on September 28. Representatives from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 212 (IATSE 212) will be on hand to share the types of positions available in the industry, and how to get your foot in the door.

The event will take place in the Symposium Room in the Campus Centre Building at SAIT from 2-3 p.m. September 28, 2017. Brought to you by The Calgary and Area Trades and Labour Action Committee. For more information, contact Leita Blasetti at 403-268-3784.

October 4: The Calgary Flames

The Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation is hiring for the upcoming hockey season. Find out about the shifts and benefits in working for the organization. Bring your resume and dress for an interview to apply in person and attend at screening interview. Representatives will be at the Youth Employment Centre October 4 from 1-4 p.m. (2ND Floor, 315-10th Ave. S.E.) For more information call 403-268-2490.

October 20: Mr. Lube

YEC will be hosting Mr.Lube for a hiring event happening on October 20th. This event is invite only and all interviews will be prescheduled ahead of time. If you are interested in this opportunity please come to the Youth Employment Centre before October 20th and get connected to one of our employment counsellors. Spots are limited and will be given out on a first come, first serve basis.

Late October: Starbucks Coffee

Starbucks will be coming to YEC in late October to hire for their Opportunity Youth Initiative! Youth between the ages of 16-24 who are interested in the barista position are encouraged to drop by the Youth Employment Centre. All interviews will be pre-scheduled ahead of time. Spots are limited for this event, please make sure to visit YEC as soon as possible!

In addition to these great job opportunities provided by the Youth Employment Centre, don’t forget about CIES’ own youth employment program: Empowering Youth Through Employment. This program is for Permanent Resident, Refugee, and low-income Canadian Citizen youth aged 15 to 30 who are actively seeking employment and are not currently receiving Employment Insurance (EI). Complete 12 weeks of in-class employability skills and 12 weeks of Canadian work experience, all while receiving minimum wage for the hours you spend in the program. Our knowledgeable instructors all have first-hand industry experience, and as a student you will have access to all of CIES’ career counselling resources. Begin your career on the right foot with CIES’ employment programs.
