Better health begins one step at a time with two new programs from The Alex Community Food Centre and Community Food Centres Canada. If you’re looking to improve your cooking skills, learn new recipes, exercise in 30-minute walk sessions, or share healthy meals with new friends, these are for you!
What is FoodFit?
FoodFit is a 13-week program for low-income community members who experience difficulty with healthy eating and physical activity, but who are motivated to make lasting changes to their health. The program combines fun, hands-on cooking sessions and food-based activities with take-home recipes, easy-to-understand nutrition information, group exercise, shared meals, self-directed individual and group goal-setting, and reflection and feedback that help participants mark their progress. The program also collects biometric indicators (your physical statistics) at the start and end of the program, and provides pedometers so participants can monitor daily steps. FoodFit respects participants’ individual abilities, and aims to give participants simple, useful tools to navigate an increasingly complex food environment. (http://cfccanada.ca/foodfit)

What is the International Ave Kitchen?
International Ave Kitchen is a pre-registered, 10-week community cooking group. It celebrates the cultural diversity of the community of Forest Lawn and honouring our place on International Avenue. Every week, participants will learn about a different cuisine from around the world. Share personal and meaningful family recipes and lead cooking activities that spark conversations about how food is prepared and perceived in different cultures. You will gain cooking skills, language skills, and a sense of belonging. This kitchen is intended to support knowledge exchange and cross-cultural food literacy skills while providing a safe and inclusive space for participation. In this program, you will have the chance to share your heritage and explore the diverse other cultures within our community. Priority will be given to applicants with low incomes.
- The International Ave Kitchen starts February 1st and runs until April 5th. Sessions are held every Thursday from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.
