It can be an expensive and traumatic experience moving to another country, especially for immigrant youth. Many children experience a breakdown of social networks, a growing sense of hopelessness, and humiliation or bullying. When you consider that almost 20% of permanent residents are children when they arrive, and that 52% of Syrian refugees in Alberta are under the age of 18, you realize how big this need for support can be.
From December 1st to December 14th The Calgary Immigrant Educational Society will be preparing gifts for refugee and newcomer children to help them overcome the trauma, uncertainty, and emotional effects of dislocation with the Fill This Basket 2018 charity donation drive. For this, we are looking for your help in being a global neighbour.
How can you help?
By donating to the Fill This Basket campaign, your money will be converted into an assortment of delightful, age and gender-appropriate gifts for children between 12 months and 11 years of age. Recipients of this gift will be children enrolled in our Care for Newcomer Children at our Whitehorn and Forest Lawn locations.
Some of the items included in last year’s baskets:
- Arts & Crafts Supplies (Stickers/Crayons/Coloured Paper)
- Children’s Books
- Board Games
- Educational Toys (toy cars, battery-toys, jump-ropes)
- Non-liquid hygiene items (soaps, combs)
- An outfit of clothing to wear (gloves, socks)
- Small musical instruments
- Stuffed Animals, Dolls & Toy Trucks
We are not accepting item donations at this time, and ask for support to be made through financial donations.
