It can be an expensive, not to mention traumatic, experience moving to another country, especially for immigrant youth. Many children experience a breakdown of social networks, a growing sense of hopelessness, and humiliation or bullying. When you consider that almost 20% of permanent residents are children when they arrive, and that 52% of Syrian refugees in Alberta are under the age of 18, you realize how big this need for support can be.
From November 20th to December 8th, The Calgary Immigrant Educational Society will be preparing gifts for refugee and newcomer children to help them overcome the trauma, uncertainty, and emotional effects of dislocation with the Fill This Basket children’s donation drive. For this, we are looking for your help in being a global neighbour.
How can you help?
During this time we will be collecting important developmental items, as well as financial donations, to distribute to children in our Care for Newcomer Children program. By delighting them with the gift of any of the following goods, or by making a donation through our website, your contribution will help the growing population of immigrant children feel welcome and engaged in the community. This is no small task, and we are aiming to put together 125 gift boxes this year.
