Next year, The Immigrant Education Society (TIES) will be hosting an innovative new conference: Refugee and Newcomer Women’s Emotional Un-wellness as a Barrier to Economic Integration. We are also now accepting our call for abstracts for the event here.
What is this conference about?
The conference will bring leading researchers, practitioners, experts as well as employers and students together with newcomer women that are currently undergoing the challenges of economic integration in various parts of Alberta and Canada.
Women new to Calgary often find themselves preoccupied with immediate settlement concerns for several years after arriving, increasing their chances of economic isolation. This is particularly acute for women who care for either a child or a disabled/sickly adult in their family. Many of these women hesitate in approaching government health services for various real and perceived reasons, such as fear for the loss of their immigration status or of financial liability. Sometimes cultural beliefs such as the reluctance to share personal problems with strangers can restrict access to support services for many newcomer women, and the prospect of having to express themselves in English to professionals is difficult to overcome. This creates precarity in newcomer women’s immediate economic security, as those who hesitate in accessing health services often resort to caring for their loved ones on their own, forgoing opportunities for employment or study, which in turn has a direct impact on the ultimate success of their integration.
Where will it be?
The conference will take place at the Central Public Library in Calgary, Canada on 29-30 January, 2020 and is funded by a Status of Women Alberta Community Grant.
